Adult Basic Skills is for adults who are over 21 and need to work developing reading, writing or math skills up to the eighth grade level. Services are provided mornings and evenings at various locations in Fulton and Montgomery Counties. Learn to Read is designed especially for adults developing reading skills. Televised by PBS affiliates, the series shows adult non-readers the connection between letters and sounds in our language. Practical for adult learners who speak English as their native language and English language learners. (Televised, distance learning) Another Page is intended to increase reading comprehension skills. Televised by PBS affiliates, it provides instruction to develop the foundation skills necessary to be successful in the GED preparation course. (Televised, distance learning) Math Basics presents lively lessons regarding real-life math as it is used at home and on the job. Televised by PBS affiliates, this program offers strategies for looking at the whole problem, helping you improve your math reasoning and problem-solving skills. (Televised, distance learning) Adult GED Classes meet twice a week for three hours each session. Classes are currently available mornings and evenings in Gloversville and Amsterdam at libraries and community based organizations. The GED program prepares adults to take the five GED tests required to complete a high school equivalency. Subjects include language arts, writing, reading, social studies, science, and math. The GED is recognized nationally as a legal equivalent of a high school diploma, provides access to many entry-level jobs, is accepted in place of a high school diploma at most community colleges and four-year colleges and universities. Giving Ready Adults a Study Program (GRASP) is a home study GED program for adults over 21 who are unable to attend classes and have at least a ninth grade reading level. Twice a month, BOCES provides packets of individualized materials to GRASP students. The student reads assignments, completes assigned activities and complete homework for six hours each week, supplemented by televised programming via PBS and Internet sites when possible. Students in the program can pick up and drop off their home study materials at many local libraries, schools, and the HFM Office of Adult Literacy and Incarcerated Education, located in the Career and technical Center. Youth GED classes provide at least 12 hours per week in academic skills, in addition to skill training for the workforce. This skill training is provided either at the Career and Technical Center or through a partnership with the Private Industry Council through a grant from the Workforce Development Board of Fulton, Montgomery and Schoharie Counties. The GED program prepares adults to take the five GED tests required to complete a high school equivalency. Subjects include language arts, writing, reading, social studies, science, and math. The GED is recognized nationally as a legal equivalent of a high school diploma at most community colleges and four-year colleges and universities.
